How to Select the Right Photography School
April 28, 2009 by Digital Photography Tips

Just like any school you will need to do your research to make sure that the photography school you select will best meet your individual needs. This article is intended to provide you several of the key areas that you should take into consideration as you begin to research good photography schools. After all it is your time and money so you owe it to yourself to make a well educated selection.
In choosing a photography school you should start by looking at the big picture. The selection of a photography school must be aligned with your specific career goals. As with any business field photography presents many opportunities in a wide range of categories. For example, you may have an interest in portrait photography, product advertising, or sports photography. At this point you may be focused more on the general aspects of photography and if so that is okay. But, if you have an area of interest it is worth your investment in time to determine the areas of specialization your short list of photography schools may have to offer. It would also be beneficial if your school of choice provides courses in general business in addition to the photography classes. This will aid you as you move from student to professional status.
I am sure you already know this but I will say it any way. Professional photography is more than point-and-shoot method for making a living. It requires an attention to detail and a wide range of skills including mathematics, business management, marketing and more. So make sure that the photography school you select can provide you the knowledge you need in the area of general business education too. Since many photographers eventually go into business on their own you will find these to be extremely valuable survival skills that will lend to your success.
It is always wise to inquire about the size of the class as well as the ratio of students to teacher. To many people in photography class can really be a hindrance toward proper learning. And it will also prohibit the instructor from providing effective hands-on supervision to each of the students.
Another skill area that should be considered is in the area of computers and you should determine if the photography school of choice provides learning in this area as well. A good photography school needs to have courses on basic computer use as well as more advance courses for those who have an interest in expanding their knowledge of digital photography as well as specialty software used for creating a digital darkroom. Since the field of photography is a very competitive it is imperative that you gain education and knowledge in this area as well.
Lastly, keep in mind that any education will have a price tag associated with it. So unless you just happen to have all of your photography education funding in hand it is worth while to determine if the schools provide scholarships or other forms of financial assistance for their students. Also keep in mind that you will more than likely need to invest in some of your own photography equipment. So I would recommend that you ask for a listing of equipment that the photography school offers to their students as well as a listing of equipment that you need to buy. This will aid you in determining the total cost of your education.
Hopefully, these recommendations will help you build your list of investigation questions so that you can make a wise and well educated decision. Choosing the right school is just as important as having a good view of where you want to go. And the right school is the best way to help you get there.

Important Features Associated With Naturalist Photography
April 26, 2009 by Digital Photography Tips

Naturalist photography was the result of social and economic trends that were opposing each other in mid 19th century; this shows us that like any other art form, photography cannot be taken out of the climate from which it is born. Naturalist photography reflects the artistic movement of the industrial age with rural life losing ground in the face of an ever more advanced machine-oriented urban society. For those times, naturalist photography clearly shows the attempt to stick to some important life aspects beyond the huge radical changes and upheavals. Presently, naturalist photography is undeniably seen as a response to the Industrial Revolution.
Naturalist photography became a sort of mirror for the dehumanization of the individual in a pervasive climate where self-consciousness was no longer enough. Distrust of technology because of its making warfare so efficient, made simple natural landscapes the perfect spiritual symbol of naturalist photographers who found a new expression in wilderness. There were so many unexplored frontiers to represent and show, that much of the human spirituality was passed onto nature by means of exquisite artistic pictures. Naturalist photography slowly evolved towards pictography that primarily meant imbuing photos with elements specific to painting, first and foremost.
Naturalist photography is part of important collections, there are still fans of this visual representations but manifestations are rather scarce. Despite the horrors going on in our modern society, the age mood is no longer the same, as little refuge can now be taken in the wild, the way our forefathers used to find. Naturalist photography suffered mutations and marked a certain type of revolution in the history of this visual art, but it has now another counterpart. Present day photojournalism and documentary pictures make the social stand naturalist photography used to take in the past.

Wedding Videography - Helpful Tips in Making a Wedding Video
April 25, 2009 by Digital Photography Tips

The wedding of your sister is coming up and due to a tight budget you were tasked to take charge of the wedding videography. Having the basic knowledge in digital videos and owning a camera does not actually qualify you to do the best job. It may seem like a demanding task but you decide to take the challenge head on. It can be a nerve-wracking experience but being prepared can do wonders for you. Here are some useful tips that will surely help you improve your digital videotaping skills in a matter of days:
? Use manual focus instead of automatic
Although all cameras have automatic focus, it is recommended that you use manual focus if possible. It is for the reason that you will have to switch constantly from one a plane to another.
Using auto focus can be a great help most of the time but unfortunately it is not perfect. In situations like macro photography, low lighting conditions, portrait shots, shooting through glass and action photography, the manual mode is much better used.
? Use both hands in handling the camera
To accomplish having a steadier image it is important to remember to hold the camera with both hands. This simple tip is usually overlooked by beginners.
? Plan your video shots
Plan ahead of time all the events of the wedding so you will have a clear idea what you can shoot on your own or if you need more assistance. You need to be able to manage your time very well because you can never recapture something that has already happened. You should also have a video timeline. This means in your wedding footage you should all have the elements that are needed to complete the entire wedding video. These include an introduction, getting ready shots, the ceremony, and reception.
? Interview the couple
A good addition to the wedding video footage is to interview the couple separately. Oftentimes this part is undervalued. Do the interview before the ceremony starts while they are getting ready.
? Shoot extra footage
One common mistake of all videographers is not having enough material for the wedding video or they took only one shot of a moment that could have been extraordinary. Avoid this by taking as many shots as possible.
? Your movements should be smooth
You should keep your movements smooth and calculated so that the images will register unto the screen the same way.
? Match camera settings
To prevent color mismatch, make sure the white balance settings are identical. Exposure manuals should be set in maximum control.
These tips are only a few things you can develop to be prepared in shooting the much awaited wedding videography. Remember these helpful guidelines are just the basics for a beginner like you. It is still important to have lots of practice and to gain lots of experience if you ever do decide to pursue the world of videography.

A Look at the Different Types of Landscape Photography Today
April 24, 2009 by Digital Photography Tips
Filed under About Photography
To my mind there are two distinctly different types of landscape photography around. That of the natural landscape photography, and that of the urban landscape photography. Both have their pros and both have their cons, and it’s really up to the photographer and their sense of imagination to get across to us a grand scene.
Be that as it may though, to get a decent landscape photography shot you don’t need to travel to far and distant lands, in fact you don’t even need to leave your home.
To start your landscape photography you can just take a ride on out to your back, or front yard, and have a quick go there to see how well you can make this everyday setting into something extraordinary.
Of course the fun with traveling to far and distant lands to get your landscape photography shots is that most of the hard work has already been done for you.
The scenes have already been set to perfection and there’s always going to be some really great vantage point that you can go to, to take your pictures.
The trouble with going it at home is that you need to set the shot up for yourself. You need to see the good in your yard and you need to be able to translate that into something that doesn’t look like your back yard.
Landscape photography is not an easy task, but it is well worth the try as you open yourself up to the vast array of possibilities and you learn to think outside of the box. So the next time you go to far and distant lands you won’t just be taking the same old boring shot that everyone before you has, instead you’ll be looking at the various possibilities to be had from different angles and how you can possibly accomplish landscape photography.
Like I said earlier there are two types of landscape photography and natural landscape photography is one of them. Landscape photography of this variety is what you see most of the time. Shots of lightning streaking down from the sky, tumbling waterfalls, roiling seas and densely packed green foliage from the middle of a rainforest, we’ve seen them all and yet we keep coming back for more. We never tire of seeing these glorious photographs, just as we never tire of seeing the more mundane landscape shots either.
The ones taken of the more tranquil scenes, of ponds filled with lily pads, of gardens filled with riotous flowers, and of mile upon mile of rolling farmland stretching out into the distance as far as the eye can see. These all appeal to us and what appeals to us most is what we will also try to photograph.
The urban jungle on the other hand is not something that appeals to everybody. Some find it to be too stark and prefer instead the landscape photography view of nature.
But the urban jungle is a truly magnificent place in which you can get lost and take the most amazing pictures. You just need to know where and how to look. There are so many interesting sights that we take for granted and pass by everyday without thinking twice about it.
It’s only when the truly inspired landscape photographer takes a look into this little world of ours and sees it for what it is and shoots it, that we also see the beauty in it. As you can see, and as you have seen in the past, landscape photography doesn’t need to be only about Nature’s landscapes, it can also be about the magnificence of man-made landscapes as well.
